The first train in Tasmania operated in 1871 running between the northern city of Launceston and nearby Deloraine. Since then the network has operated mainly, and now solely, for freight between all major centres.
Nevertheless there are eight or nine historic railway tours operating throughout the island state operating restored diesel and steam locomotives along scenic coastlines and thru hilly gorges.
The Ida Bay Railway and the West Coast Wilderness Historical Railways are just two of these life experiences not to be forgotten.
